The career landscape has changed dramatically from what it was when our grandparents and parents were starting their careers. Gone are the days of finding a job and then spending the next 30 or 40 years working for that company. To succeed in today’s job market, you have to be agile, able to pivot, and willing to reinvent yourself over and over again. Career experts say the average person will switch careers (not just jobs, but careers) an average of 4-5 times over his or her lifetime. A recent study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that Americans will hold an average of 10-12 jobs in their lifetime.
Mastering the ability to reinvent yourself is a crucial skill in today’s economic reality, and yet traditional education doesn’t address it. None of us were taught growing up how to think of ourselves as a brand.
The Start-up of You, by Reid Hoffman (co-founder of LinkedIn) and Ben Casnocha, and Business Model You, by the authors of Business Model Generation, both offer fresh, unique perspectives on how to build and manage your career.
In The Start-up of You, the authors explain, “If you want to seize new opportunities and meet the challenges of today’s fractured career landscape, you need to think and act like you’re running a start-up: your career.”
They introduce The Start-up of You Mind-Set, which they call PERMANENT BETA. If you’re in Permanent Beta, you’re always starting, and always a work in progress. Permanent Beta represents a lifelong commitment to personal growth and development (not unlike Jane's Path of Mastery).
Mind-set alone isn’t enough to ensure success though. Entrepreneurs need concrete skills as well, skills you’ll need if you’re going to become an entrepreneur of your own life:
- Develop competitive advantage — combine three puzzle pieces into a coherent whole: your assets, your aspirations, and the market realities
- ABZ planning — formulate a Plan A based on your competitive advantage, and then iterate and adapt that plan based on feedback and lessons learned
- Build a professional network — based on real, lasting relationships
- Find and create opportunities for yourself by tapping networks, being resourceful, and staying in motion
- Take intelligent risks
- Tap network intelligence for insight that leads to better opportunities and better career decisions
Business Model You applies the framework we've been working with all semester to career transition, giving you an easy, one-page method for reinventing your career.
